Resumo | Heavy rainfall episodes are one of the worst natural disasters in southern Brazil. A heavy rainfall episode is defined in this work as one in which the 50 mm/day isohyet covered at least 10,000 km2. 170 such episodes occurred in 11 years (1991-2001), approximately 40 per season. The strongest 10% cases are designated extreme ones. Heavy rainfall quantity (HRQ) is defined in this study as the product of the intensity and the area of rainfall. Composites of atmospheric variables for the heavy rainfall episodes and for the extreme rainfall episodes were obtained. The meteorological variables at each grid point of the domain 140W-20W; 10S-60S were correlated with HRQ in southern Brazil, obtaining the spatial distribution of correlation. The most important indicators of the episodes are (1) an approaching trough at the 500 hPa from the South Pacific on to the continent in the latitude belt 20S-45S in the five days preceding the episode, (2) strong 850 hPa meridional winds (up to 18 m s-1) in the region of Paraguay, Northeastern Argentina and Southern Brazil in the three days preceding the event, (3) strong zonal winds (40 m s-1) at 250 hPa around 35 S, southeast of southern Brazil, (4) moisture flux convergence of more than 1.2x10-7 s-1 over the region, and (5) the formation of a surface low in northern Argentina, west of the region of heavy rainfall, in the 24 hours preceding the event. The results are useful for understanding the events and improvement of forecasts in Southern Brazil. |
